FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Thank you for your interest in permanent makeup! This page is dedicated to some of the most common questions asked about microblading and other forms of permanent makeup. Please read the page in its entirety before booking your appointment to ensure you are a good candidate and are fully prepared before your appointment. Getting the best results starts before you ever step foot in my studio! I am so looking forward to meeting you at your appointment and creating your dream brows, can’t wait to meet you!
WHAT IS MICROBLADING?
This is the process of infusing pigment into the skin to simulate the appearance of natural hair. It is considered a tattoo, and permanent makeup. Although it is considered permanent makeup, it does fade over time. Touch ups are suggested once a year in order to keep the color fresh and shape precise.
Microblading is meant to be a natural enhancement, and to create the appearance of full, beautiful brows. It looks most natural on clients who already have semi full brow hair, and are wanting to perfect their shape. The more hair you have, the more natural it will appear.
Microblading heals best on young, healthy skin that is normal-dry.
Oily skin and aging/thin skin is not recommended for microblading. Results will not heal as well, or look as natural. If you have aging or oily skin, you are better suited for a combination or ombre brow!
WHAT IS COMBINATION BROW?
This is the process of infusing pigment into the skin to simulate the appearance of filled in brows. When we microblade, we only add hair stokes to the brows to make them look full and natural. If you prefer a more “filled in” look, this is for you! A combination brow combines microblading strokes with shading, giving the brows more density and a soft ombre effect. This is a beautiful look for all skin types (including oily/aging skin), and heals very soft and beautiful.
WHAT IS AN OMBRE BROW?
Unlike microblading or a combination brow, and ombre brow has no hair strokes. This look is ideal for those that want their brows looking super fleeky 24/7! This style may look intense at first, but heals to the most gorgeous powdery look. An ombre brow is also ideal for oily or aging skin, and lasts longer than microblading or combination brows.
HOW LONG WILL MY SEMI-PERMANENT COSMETICS LAST?
Cosmetic tattooing is designed to fade over time. Factors such as skin type, lifestyle, age, metabolism, medications, and pigment color affect the longevity of the tattoo. The sun and some kinds of lighting (tanning beds) can affect the rate at which these pigments are broken down. To take care of your brows follow the aftercare instructions and touch-up your brows every 12-18 months (as needed). Touch-ups are normal and expected for Permanent Cosmetics.
*Please note that final results vary and CANNOT be guaranteed due to the nature of skin as it heals. A follow-up appointment is recommended at 4-8 weeks where we can assess your pigment retention and make any changes necessary.
WHAT FACTORS WILL AFFECT MY PERMANENT COSMETICS?
Oily Skin: Increased oil production can cause hair strokes to blur and heal lighter and powdery.
Smoking: Smokers may notice that their Semi-Permanent Cosmetics will fade faster
Anemia and Iron Deficiency: Your body will absorb iron based pigments more quickly.
Sun Exposure: Increased exposure to the sun will cause premature fading. You will want to use a special sunscreen for your Semi-Permanent Cosmetics (Color Guard on Amazon is amazing!)
Age and Metabolism. The Faster your metabolism the faster the pigment will fade.
Excessive Bleeding: Excessive bleeding during your procedure will greatly affect how your body retains pigment. While this is not entirely in our control, it is important that you follow before care instructions to help minimize bleeding. This includes avoiding blood thinning medications, alcohol, and caffeine 24 hours before your procedure.
DO PERMANENT COSMETICS HURT?
No! Topical 5% Lidocaine is used throughout the procedure to make you comfortable . Pain tolerance varies from client to client, and some clients feel a slight discomfort. Having the procedure during your menstrual cycle may increase your sensitivity.
YOU CANNOT RECEIVE PERMANENT COSMETICS IF YOU ARE:
Currently using Accutane, or have used Accutane within the past year
Have a freshly tanned/sunburned face
Are on blood thinning medications or antibiotics
Are currently undergoing cancer treatment
Must be off Chemo or Radiation for 6 months
HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY APPOINTMENT?
If you have reference pictures, please feel free to bring these to your appointment. Along with the pencil or powder you are currently using.
If you tint your brows you will want to do so 72 hours before your appointment.
You must not use Retin-A near the brow area 2 weeks before or after the procedure.
You will need to avoid water for 7 -10 days after! This includes excessive sweating, pools, lakes, salt water, and extreme sun exposure, so plan your vacations accordingly!
No Botox, fillers, Microdermabrasion, chemical peels or anything of the like for at least 2 weeks prior to your procedure, and also two weeks after.
DOING ANY OF THE FOLLOWING WILL CAUSE EXCESSIVE BLEEDING AND HINDER YOUR FINAL RESULT:
Do not work out the day of your appointment.
You should not take any medications that may thin your blood (i.e. Aspirin, Ibproferen) 72 hours before or immediately after your procedure.
Do not drink alcohol within 24 hours of your procedure.
Avoid caffeine for 12 hours before your procedure. (Caffeine increases blood flow and will effect your healed results)
WHAT CAN I EXPECT IMMEDIATELY AFTER MY APPOINTMENT?
Immediately after getting your brows done, you may experience minor redness or swelling around the treated area, which typically goes away within 24 hours. Within the following hours, the pigment in the skin will darken, making the brows look more bold than they were initially. This is normal! The ink will look dark and warm the first few days as it oxidizes in the skin, and will go back to normal. You can expect the brows to heal 10-20% lighter than they were immediately after your appointment.
Around day 3-4, you may notice light scabbing and flaking on the treated area. This is normal! Please refrain from picking at the brows. Doing so will result in loss of pigment in those areas. Brows may appear spotty or patchy until the entire brow has finished healing. Once all the flaking is complete (typically around day 10), the brows will appear lighter. The skin will normalize over the next 4-6 weeks and the pigment will return to the skin in it’s healed color.
At 4-6 weeks, your brows will be fully healed. Whatever pigment that does not return will be addressed at your touch up appointment. At this appointment, we will asses your retention, touch up the spots that didn’t stick, and can adjust the pigment color to give you perfect brows! Once the brows have healed from your touch up appointment, you will have beautiful, full brows for 12-36 months!
Following the given aftercare is crucial to obtain the best results! The following aftercare will be texted to you at your appointment, and will be discussed in detail. All needed aftercare items will be provided to you!
o Avoid getting your new brows wet until ALL flaking has stopped (usually 10 days). This means keeping them dry in the shower (no steamy ones for a few days either!), no excessive sweating, no steam rooms, swimming, etc.
o Cleanse morning and night for 7 days with the provided cleanser.
o Apply a rice-sized amount of balm to the brows 3x a day for 2 weeks with a q-tip. The brows should be lightly coated, not goopy.
o Save extra cleanser and balm for your touch up appt, you should have enough for both!
o You may wear makeup around the brows, but nothing directly over or around them for 2 weeks. Once ALL the flaking has stopped, you may fill in any little patches with a pencil until your touch up.
o Avoid direct sun exposure for 2 weeks. If extended sun exposure is happening, you must wear a large hat to protect the brows as they heal.
o Do not touch, pick, rub, or scratch the brows. Do not pick the scabs or flakes as they come off, this will remove the pigment and lead to patchiness. Let it happen and trust the process!
o No anti-aging or acne products on the brows ever (anything with Retinol, Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid, etc.)
DO I NEED A TOUCH UP APPOINTMENT?
Yes! All Permanent Cosmetic procedures require 2 sessions. During your 4-8 week follow-up we can assess your pigment retention and make any adjustments needed. This follow-up also increases the longevity of your Semi-Permanent Cosmetics.
DO I NEED A CONSULTATION BEFORE RECEIVING PERMANENT COSMETICS?
At this time, I do not offer consult appointments. If you have a specific question or concern you are welcome to text me prior to your appointment. I book enough time to discuss your needs and wants at your initial appointment. If you are in need of correction work or have had your brows tattooed elsewhere, please text me a photo before booking.
HOW LONG DOES THE PROCEDURE TAKE?
Initial appointments take approximately 3 hours. This includes the designing process, numbing the area, and Semi-Permanent Cosmetics procedure. Follow-up sessions take approximately 1 hour.
I'VE HAD MY BROWS DONE PREVIOUSLY BY A DIFFERENT ARTIST, WILL YOU FIX THEM/TOUCH THEM UP?
I require that anyone who has had their brows tattooed previously by another artist text me a picture before booking an appointment. This way we can discuss price, your options and schedule sufficient time. Any client coming to me from a different artist is considered a new client, with full prices.
